A reflection on the roots of Galaxy Recording Co. and the story behind JJ Gair’s debut album, Tell It As It Is.
By Devon Neidig, Founder & Engineer at Galaxy Recording Co.
The Beginning
When I look back at the catalog of music that has come through the doors of Galaxy Recording Co., one project stands out as the catalyst for everything that followed: JJ Gair’s album, Tell It As It Is.
Released on May 2, 2025, this project holds a special place in my history. It began long before Galaxy Recording Co was a fully fledged studio, back when I was still working through my degree at Full Sail University. I first connected with JJ through my former high school marching band drum instructor, Adam. At the time, it was a simple, unpaid recording project.
The turning point was the song "Lena."
I loved working on "Lena," and I realized JJ’s sound had real, untapped potential, so I decided to go all in. I went from being the person behind the board to becoming a true partner in the journey. I helped build the brand, handled live sound for gigs, and even managed the band, "JJ Gair & Da Country Outlaws," for a time.
If you know JJ, you know he’s a brilliant musician, though they would be the first to admit their relationship with a computer is… complicated. I spent a lot of time bridging that gap and pushing the online presence as far as my early experience could take us. Eventually, I realized that to reach the next level, professional management was essential. I stepped back from the managerial role to focus on what I do best: managing JJ’s music and serving as the recording engineer and helping shape that signature sound.
A lot has changed since those early days. Members have come and gone, including our former guitarist Chris, who has moved on to a new chapter. We’re thrilled to welcome Lori to the lineup on guitar, bringing fresh energy to the music.
Tell It As It Is is a project I’m incredibly proud of. It represents the foundation of the relationship between Galaxy Recording Co. and JJ Gair Music. It captures a specific moment in our growth, and it’s a record that deserves a listen from anyone who appreciates genuine, roots-driven music.
If you have not sat down with this album lately, I’d love for you to give it another spin. Let’s bring these songs back to the front of the line and on the charts.
